Sunderland reopen talks for Austrian-Ghanaian defender Kevin Danso as fresh offer looms

Sunderland have stepped up their pursuit of Tottenham defender Kevin Danso after reopening negotiations with Spurs over a potential move for the centre-back.

According to Sky Sports, Tottenham previously rejected a loan proposal from the Black Cats, but Sunderland remain keen to secure the 27-year-old and are hopeful of finding an agreement.

Sunderland are now considering submitting a fresh loan offer for Danso, with a view to making the move permanent at the end of the temporary spell.

Tottenham face homegrown dilemma

However, any deal could depend on Tottenham securing a replacement before sanctioning Danso’s departure.

Spurs currently have the required eight homegrown players in their Premier League squad, meaning allowing the defender to leave without bringing in another eligible player could leave them short of the required number.

That situation could complicate Sunderland’s efforts to complete the transfer, despite their renewed push to take Danso to the Stadium of Light.

Spurs paid £21m for Danso

Tottenham signed Danso permanently from Lens for £21 million last summer after initially bringing him to north London.

The Austria international is classified as a homegrown player in the Premier League after developing through the academies at Reading and MK Dons.

His status makes him particularly valuable to Tottenham’s squad registration plans, adding another layer to negotiations with Sunderland.

The Black Cats’ willingness to explore a loan deal with an option or obligation to make the transfer permanent could provide a potential route forward, but Tottenham’s need for a replacement remains a key factor.

Sunderland will therefore have to wait for Spurs to resolve their squad situation as they continue their efforts to bring Danso to the club.
