Sunderland open negotiations for Cameroon international Arthur Avom Ebong
Sunderland AFC are reported to be in advanced negotiations with the representatives of Arthur Avom Ebong as the Cameroonian midfielder approaches the end of his contract with FC Lorient.
The 21-year-old, whose current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, has been drawing increasing attention after a series of impressive displays in Ligue 1.
His performances in recent weeks have strengthened his reputation and pushed his estimated market value to around €9m.
Avom Ebong’s contract situation has made him an attractive target for several clubs across Europe. Among those reportedly monitoring his progress are Chelsea FC, RC Strasbourg Alsace, Galatasaray SK and Stade Rennais FC.
However, Sunderland are said to have moved ahead of the competition as discussions with the player’s camp continue.
According to Africafoot, the English club’s interest is supported by their manager Régis Le Bris, who previously worked with Avom Ebong during his time at Lorient.
His familiarity with the midfielder’s abilities is believed to have played a role in Sunderland’s pursuit of the player.
Negotiations between the various parties are understood to be progressing positively, although no final agreement has yet been reached.
Reports suggest a four-year contract is under consideration, with an additional option year included in the proposed deal.
Avom Ebong has established himself as a regular presence in Lorient’s midfield this season. He has made 22 appearances in Ligue 1, scoring one goal and providing one assist while playing a consistent role in the team’s line-up.
With the end of the season approaching, the midfielder’s future remains a subject of growing interest. If discussions continue on their current path, Sunderland could secure the signing of a young international player whose recent form has attracted attention across several major European leagues.
