Stephan El Shaarawy: Roma’s Italy-Egypt winger linked with surprise Bursaspor switch

Italy-Egypt left winger Stephan El Shaarawy of Roma is being linked with a move to Turkish side Bursaspor, with the 33-year-old’s future in Serie A increasingly uncertain.

Data from Transfermarkt lists the former Italy international, who was born in Savona on 27 October 1992, as a Roma player with no recorded contract expiry date, fuelling talk that he could yet run down his deal and explore a free-agent exit. The probability of a transfer to Bursaspor is currently rated at 21%, underlining that discussions remain at a speculative stage rather than an advanced negotiation.

El Shaarawy, who stands at 1.78m and prefers his right foot despite operating mainly as an attacking left winger, has a current market value of €2.40m. Any move at or below that figure would represent a relatively low-cost gamble for Bursaspor, who compete in Türkiye’s 2. Lig Kirmizi and are seeking experienced attacking options to spearhead an ascent back up the national pyramid.

The Roma No 92, who holds dual Italian and Egyptian nationality, has spent recent seasons as a versatile forward option for the Giallorossi, featuring across the front line. In his latest outing for Roma – a late-season Serie A fixture in May 2026 against domestic opposition – he featured in a narrow game that underlined his continued tactical usefulness, even if his influence is no longer that of his early-career peak.

Having previously represented several high-profile clubs across Europe and beyond, El Shaarawy’s next step is expected to balance playing time, status and the potential to become a key figure again rather than a rotation option. Should a move to Bursaspor materialise, it would mark a striking change of direction and could yet offer the Italy-Egypt winger a final platform to reshape the closing chapter of his career.
