Reigning champions Zamalek have crashed out of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup after suffering a surprise 1-0 home defeat to South Africa’s Stellenbosch FC in the second leg of their quarter-final clash in Cairo on Wednesday evening.
A late goal from winger Sele Ndule stunned the Cairo International Stadium crowd and sealed Stellenbosch’s historic qualification to the semi-finals — their first ever at this level. The result saw the South African side progress 1-0 on aggregate, having held Zamalek to a goalless draw in the first leg.
Below-par Zamalek undone at home
It was a night to forget for Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro and his Zamalek side, who lacked cohesion and failed to mount serious pressure on the Stellenbosch defence across both legs. Missing key attackers such as Ahmed Mostafa “Zizo” — amid contract issues — and veteran playmaker Mahmoud “Shikabala” due to injury, Zamalek struggled to create clear-cut chances.
Although Tunisian forward Seifeddine Jaziri had multiple opportunities, including a one-on-one in the second half, he failed to convert. Midfielders Nasser Maher and Abdullah El-Said also saw their efforts drift wide or into the gloves of Stellenbosch goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke.
Zamalek’s best chance came early in the second half when El-Said released Jaziri behind the defence, but the striker blasted over. The home side lacked urgency and were too slow in building up attacks.
Stellenbosch strike late to stun the champions
Stellenbosch, coached by Steve Barker, remained disciplined throughout and capitalised on a defensive lapse late in the game. In the 79th minute, a quick cross from the left wing found Sele Ndule, who timed his run perfectly and coolly slotted the ball past Mohamed Awad to silence the home fans.
Zamalek tried to rally in the final 10 minutes, introducing Nasser Mansi and Mahmoud Gehad in search of an equaliser, but their efforts were unconvincing. A late header from Mahmoud El Wensh was comfortably collected by Masuluke, and a wild effort from Nabil Dunga summed up the hosts’ frustrating evening.
The final whistle sparked wild celebrations from the visiting bench, as Stellenbosch etched their name into the semi-finals and ended Zamalek’s title defence.
What’s next?
With the win, Stellenbosch FC now awaits a semi-final showdown with Simba SC, who defeated Al Masry of Egypt on penalties earlier on Wednesday.
For Zamalek, the early exit will intensify pressure on the club’s management, who must now address both on-field issues and contract-related distractions that have plagued their season.
