Stellenbosch lose key duo in crucial build-up to Orlando Pirates clash

Stellenbosch FC’s preparations for a crucial home clash against Orlando Pirates on Tuesday evening have been disrupted by two significant setbacks, just as the Western Cape side look to strengthen their push for a top-half finish.

The encounter at Athlone Stadium carries added weight given Pirates’ title ambitions and Stellenbosch’s own need for points in the race for a top eight finish.

The most immediate setback comes in attack, where on-loan striker Tshegofatso Mabasa will be unavailable for selection. A clause in his loan agreement prevents him from facing his parent club, ruling him out of the high-profile fixture.

The 29-year-old, whose future remains a subject of growing speculation as his contract with Pirates nears its end, has attracted reported interest from Kaizer Chiefs, who are said to be monitoring developments involving the Buccaneers’ second-highest all-time scorer.

Mabasa has made a meaningful impact since arriving in the Winelands during the January transfer window. He has registered four goals in 15 appearances, including a vital equaliser against league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns a fortnight ago, underlining his importance in key moments for the side.

As if the attacking blow was not enough, head coach Gavin Hunt will also be without defensive mainstay Thabo Moloisane. The centre-back is suspended, leaving a notable gap in Stellenbosch’s back line at a time when defensive organisation will be tested against one of the league’s most potent attacking units.

Hunt may now turn to Belgian defender Henry Stanic as a potential replacement. The tall and athletic defender arrived in South Africa earlier this year and showed early promise under former coach Steve Barker, but has since slipped down the pecking order following Hunt’s appointment in January.

Stanic has been restricted to bench duties in the last six matches, though the circumstances may now force his return to the starting eleven.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm, with club officials confirming a full house at Athlone Stadium. Supporters have been urged to arrive early, as all tickets have been sold out and no matchday sales will be available at the gate.
