Start Rio Ngumoha against Tottenham – John Aldridge urges
Former John Aldridge has urged Liverpool F.C. to hand teenage winger Rio Ngumoha a starting role against Tottenham Hotspur F.C. this weekend, arguing the 17-year-old’s direct style could inject badly needed energy into Liverpool’s attack.
The youngster has steadily built a reputation among supporters despite limited minutes, and Aldridge believes the time has come for the club to trust his potential in a high profile Premier League fixture.
Ngumoha has made 18 appearances across competitions this season, scoring once and accumulating 483 minutes as he gradually earns the confidence of fans eager to see more of the academy prospect.
His fearless approach on the wing and willingness to take defenders on have stood out during brief cameos, particularly at a time when Liverpool’s attack has struggled for sharpness in recent weeks.
Aldridge believes the teenager provides qualities currently missing from Liverpool’s frontline, highlighting his pace, unpredictability and confidence in one-on-one situations. Speaking to BoyleSports, the former striker said the winger brings a sense of spontaneity that defenders find difficult to read.
“Ngumoha is a huge talent. He’s got everything, the pace that we lack at the moment, the rawness where he’s not a robot. Give him the ball, he’ll do what he wants to do.
“When he knows what he’s going to do, the players he’s playing against don’t have a clue anyway. He’s a breath of fresh air at the moment when you’re watching Liverpool.”
Aldridge also urged caution with the youngster’s development but insisted opportunities must follow the excitement surrounding his rise.
“He’s only 17, and he’s at a massive club. You don’t want him to get big-headed, so you’ve got to handle it the right way. But for me, he needs more game time. He’s not been brought on enough this season, not even for 15 or 20 minutes in certain games, nor started games. For example, Tottenham on Sunday I would start him.
“Tottenham, I think, is an ideal game. With all due respect to the way Tottenham are at the moment, start him.”
Liverpool are chasing three crucial points on Sunday in their push for a top four finish, and Ngumoha could finally get his chance.
