Stade du 4‑Août in Ouagadougou, the Burkinabe capital, has reopened its doors to the public following a comprehensive refurbishment programme, marking a significant milestone for Burkina Faso’s national football team, the Stallions.
On 1 July 2025, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) formally approved the stadium as a Category III facility, commending the Burkinabe government and the Football Federation for bringing the venue up to international standards.
This approval clears the way for the Stallions to play their home World Cup qualifying matches in Ouagadougou for the first time in years. A press tour held on Wednesday allowed local and international media to inspect the revamped facilities.
Upon entering the stadium, visitors are greeted by a striking sign identifying Ouagadougou, flanked by vivid murals of Captain Thomas Sankara, paying homage to the country’s revolutionary icon. Above the entrance, a newly installed “Stade du 04 août” sign prominently announces the stadium’s name.
Cutting‑Edge Visuals and Pitch
The recent upgrades include the installation of giant video screens that replay key moments in slow motion, enhancing the in‑stadium experience. Stadium lighting has also been upgraded to meet the higher standards required for evening broadcasts and international competition.
The playing surface has undergone a complete overhaul. The hybrid turf—combining natural grass with synthetic reinforcement—was selected for its resilience under Ouagadougou’s climate. Surrounding the pitch, brand‑new perimeter advertising panels have been installed.
Modernised Dressing Rooms and VIP Areas
Support staff and players now enjoy four refurbished locker rooms, designed to FIFA-recommended specifications. Each facility includes illuminated nameplates for ease of access. One locker room is dedicated to officials, while another caters specifically to ball boys. The international‑level suites will be used during official African and World Cup qualifiers.
High above the stands, an array of VIP and VVIP boxes now offer premium seating, plush furnishings, and exclusive service options. These venues provide an elevated matchday experience, complete with panoramic views of the pitch.
Enhanced Media Infrastructure
Reporters and broadcasters will benefit from the stadium’s enhanced media facilities. The press area now features a comfortable waiting room, a fully upgraded press box equipped with high-speed internet, and two purpose-built TV and radio studios to support live coverage.
Accessibility and Safety Improvements
Accessibility has been prioritised in the redesign. The stadium now boasts a dedicated area for spectators with reduced mobility, ensuring inclusivity for all fans. Approximately 150 security cameras have been installed both inside and outside the arena, feeding into a central Observation Centre where staff can monitor crowd movement and maintain safety protocols.
A newly established first-aid station offers medical support to attendees, while multiple entry and exit points have been optimised to facilitate efficient crowd management.
Adjacent Sports Facilities
Beyond the main stadium, the complex now includes a comprehensive sports centre, featuring two basketball courts, a support football pitch, a tennis court, a volleyball court, and a handball court. This multi‑sports setup underlines Burkina Faso’s commitment to fostering athletic development at all levels.
Looking Ahead to August 4th
The official reopening of Stade du 4‑Août is scheduled for 4 August 2025, when the Stallions will face Egypt in a 2026 World Cup qualifying match. The return of the national team to their home city stadium will represent the culmination of years of planning and construction, signalling a proud moment for Burkinabe football.
As Ouagadougou readies itself for this landmark event, excitement is building not just within the footballing community, but across the nation—ushering the stadium “from shadow to light” in more ways than one.
