Stade de Reims has issued a strong statement in support of teenage defender Khalil-Liam Kie after the youngster became the target of racist abuse on social media following the announcement of his signing.
The 16-year-old, who joined the French club from their youth academy, was subjected to a barrage of discriminatory and defamatory comments online, with some users questioning his age and launching racially charged remarks.
The abuse surfaced shortly after Reims confirmed the player’s professional status.
In response, the club moved swiftly to denounce the online harassment, reaffirming its commitment to upholding the values of respect and inclusivity in football.
“The Stade de Reims strongly condemns the racist and hateful messages directed at Khalil-Liam Kie following the announcement of his signing,” the club said in a statement released on Saturday. “Such behaviour is not only unacceptable, but it stands in direct opposition to the principles we defend within our institution and the wider football community.”
The club also reiterated its full support for the young defender, calling on authorities and social media platforms to take necessary action against those responsible for the abuse.
“Khalil-Liam Kie can count on the unconditional support of his club, his teammates, and the entire Reims family. We will not tolerate any form of racism or discrimination,” the statement added.
Kie, who has been regarded as one of the promising prospects in the Reims academy, has yet to comment publicly on the matter.
The club, however, confirmed that psychological and legal assistance would be made available to the player and his family as the situation develops.
The incident has sparked wider outrage across French football circles, with calls for stronger monitoring of digital platforms and harsher penalties for individuals engaging in online hate speech.
Several clubs and players have also expressed solidarity with Kie on social media, using the hashtag #SupportKhalil.
This incident highlights the persistent issue of racism in football and the importance of safeguarding young athletes from targeted abuse, especially at pivotal stages in their careers.
As Stade de Reims moves forward with its pre-season plans, it does so with a renewed commitment to protecting the dignity and mental well-being of all its players.
