St Éloi Lupopo miss out on CAF Champions League spot after disappointing domestic finish

St Éloi Lupopo will not compete in next season’s CAF Champions League after failing to secure a top-two finish in the Democratic Republic of Congo Premier League, bringing a disappointing end to a campaign that had once promised another memorable continental adventure.

The Lubumbashi-based club fell short in the race for qualification, missing out on one of the coveted spots reserved for DR Congo’s representatives in Africa’s premier club competition.

The failure to qualify comes just a season after Lupopo enjoyed one of the most remarkable campaigns in the club’s recent history on the continental stage.

The Yellow and Blue captured the imagination of their supporters by reaching the group stage of the CAF Champions League for the first time, a feat highlighted by their impressive elimination of South African giants Orlando Pirates in the second preliminary round.

That historic triumph had raised expectations that the club would establish itself as a regular contender on the African scene.

However, inconsistent results during the domestic campaign ultimately proved costly, leaving the former Congolese champions outside the qualification places.

Lupopo’s absence from next season’s Champions League will be a major setback for both the club and its supporters, who had hoped to witness another run in continental football following last season’s breakthrough.

Club officials and technical staff are now expected to assess the campaign and begin preparations for the new season as they seek to bounce back and return to Africa’s elite club competition.

For a side that showed immense promise and ambition just months ago, missing out on continental football represents a tough conclusion to a season that many believed would deliver much more.
