Springboks to send ‘quality team’ to Buenos Aires as Erasmus targets All Blacks build-up

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus says South Africa will field a strong side for their one-off Test against Argentina in Buenos Aires on 8 August, using the match as a key staging point for their forthcoming series against New Zealand.

The fixture in the Argentine capital falls just weeks before the All Blacks arrive in South Africa for the highly anticipated “Greatest Rivalry Tour” in August and September, and will double as a crucial fitness and selection test for several returning Springbok stars.

Erasmus has announced a wider training group of 43 players, who will start filtering back into camp from Sunday. That squad will then be divided, with one contingent travelling to Argentina and the rest remaining in South Africa to continue specific preparations for the clash with New Zealand.

Argentina Test to shape All Blacks preparations

Although Argentina have struggled for consistency in recent months, Erasmus is adamant that the Pumas present a serious threat at home – and that South Africa cannot afford to treat the match as a mere friendly.

“They are a quality team, and they have proved that in our previous clashes,” said Erasmus.

“In fact, they defeated us in Argentina the last time we faced them there in 2024, so we know how tough it is to win there, and we intend to take a quality team to Buenos Aires.”

That defeat in 2024 remains fresh in the Springbok coach’s mind, and is shaping his selection thinking as he tries to balance the need for momentum, confidence and match sharpness with the longer-term goal of peaking against the All Blacks.

The Buenos Aires encounter is expected to give key squad members crucial game time after injury layoffs, while also allowing fringe players a final opportunity to press their claims for inclusion in the matchday squads to face New Zealand.

Big names set for return to action

The exact composition of the Springbok touring party for Argentina has not yet been confirmed, but it is widely anticipated that several senior figures who missed the recent Nations Championship through injury will be reintegrated.

Among those in line for a comeback are captain Siya Kolisi and lock pairing Eben Etzebeth and Lood de Jager, with others also being monitored closely by the medical and conditioning staff.

Their return would significantly bolster South Africa’s physical presence up front and leadership across the park – areas that Erasmus views as non-negotiable, particularly when preparing for a series against the All Blacks.

Former Bok coach Nick Mallett has already suggested that Erasmus “achieved exactly what he wanted” from the Nations Championship campaign, and the Argentina Test now forms part of the next phase of fine-tuning in a busy international calendar.

The logistical split of the 43-man group – between those travelling to Buenos Aires and those staying behind – reflects Erasmus’s attempt to run parallel preparation tracks: one focused on immediate performance against Argentina, the other on tactical, physical and mental readiness for New Zealand.

While some rotation and experimentation are likely, Erasmus’s insistence on sending a “quality team” to Argentina underlines his respect for the Pumas and the importance of building winning habits.
