Spanish-Moroccan star Lamine Yamal dismisses criticism of 18th birthday party
Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal has brushed aside criticism surrounding his recent birthday celebrations, declaring he remains focused and content following the signing of a new long-term contract with the club.
The 18-year-old, widely regarded as one of the brightest young prospects in European football, recently committed his future to the Catalan giants and was handed the iconic No. 10 shirt previously worn by club legends Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona.
Yamal, who is of Moroccan and Equatoguinean descent, made the comments during a press conference organised to confirm his contract renewal.
The Spain international has come under scrutiny from Spain’s Equality Ministry over allegations that his 18th birthday party involved the exploitation of individuals with dwarfism and women—claims that have sparked public debate and prompted an official investigation.
Despite the controversy, Yamal showed little sign of distraction during the media briefing.
Addressing questions about the matter, he maintained that his private life should be viewed separately from his professional responsibilities. “Ultimately, I work for Barca, I play for Barca, but when I’m away from the Ciudad Deportiva, I enjoy my life, and that’s it,” he said.
Yamal’s new contract marks a significant milestone in his development, underscoring the club’s confidence in his long-term potential.
Since breaking into the first team last season, the teenager has shown flashes of brilliance that have led many to predict a Ballon d’Or contender.
