The Spanish media has turned its attention to the final list unveiled by Walid Regragui, the head coach of the Moroccan national football team, for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations scheduled to be hosted by Ivory Coast at the beginning of next year.
This focus primarily stems from the situation surrounding Ibrahim Diaz, the Moroccan-origin star from Real Madrid.
The website “relevo” affirmed that the Royal Moroccan Football Federation made significant efforts to persuade Diaz to represent the “Atlas Lions” over Spain.
However, according to the same source, this has now become impossible.
The source further stated that Luis de la Fuente, the coach of the Spanish national team, has Diaz in his plans for a call-up in March.
At the same time, it is noted that the player wants to play for Spain, a sentiment Diaz has not explicitly expressed in the past.
Diaz consistently emphasizes that his focus is on his future with the “Royal” team whenever asked about the international colors he will defend.
The Spanish site acknowledged that the Real Madrid forward has a strong connection to his homeland, Morocco, as a significant part of his family resides in the kingdom.
The same source attempted to send a direct message to the coach of “La Roja” to call up Diaz, reminding him of the case of Inaki Williams, the striker for Athletic Bilbao.
Williams chose to represent Ghana after finding himself outside the plans of the Spain coach.
Regarding the matter, the coach of “La Roja” stated in a previous statement, “To my knowledge, he wants to play for Spain, pending an official decision in the future.”
Meanwhile, the national coach, Walid Regragui, asserts that the doors of the national team are open to anyone who feels ready to defend the Moroccan colors with passion.
