Spanish football authorities launch investigation into alleged racial abuse of Moroccan defender Omar El Helali
The disciplinary committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) will open a formal investigation into alleged racist abuse directed at Moroccan defender Omar El Helali.
El Helali, who plies his trade for Espanyol was racially abused by Elche player Rafa Mir during their La Liga clash at the weekend.
The investigation comes after the incident was detailed in the referee’s match report after the much-anticipated clash.
As per referee, Ayuso Gallich Abiztega, in the 78th minute, El Helali claimed that Mir directed the words, “You arrived on a migrant boat,” at him. None of the other match officials reportedly heard the comment, prompting the referee to activate the anti-racism protocol and pause the game for three minutes.
Under RFEF procedures, an investigator will now gather statements from all parties involved. The disciplinary process allows for the case to be closed without penalty if no evidence is substantiated. However, if the claim is verified, Rafa Mir will be notified and given the opportunity to present a defense before the committee issues a final sanction.
According to current Spanish FA regulations, proven racist misconduct can carry a suspension of up to ten matches under Article 105, which addresses serious offenses that violate public order.
The Disciplinary Committee is expected to reach a preliminary decision by Wednesday, with the investigation ensuring a thorough review before any formal sanction is announced. This case underscores ongoing efforts within Spanish football to tackle racism and uphold integrity on the pitch.
