Spain extend Luis de la Fuente contract to 2032 after World Cup triumph

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has unanimously approved a contract extension for Luis de la Fuente, keeping the Spain manager in charge until 2032.

The decision was taken by the federation’s board, chaired by Rafael Louzan, during a meeting at the City of Football in Las Rozas. It represents a clear commitment to the long-term project led by De la Fuente, who has been rewarded after guiding Spain to the 2026 World Cup title.

The agreement will keep the experienced manager at the helm through a series of major international tournaments, including Euro 2028, the 2030 World Cup and Euro 2032.

The 2030 World Cup will be hosted jointly by Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina.

Louzan said the extension was designed to provide continuity and allow De la Fuente’s work with the national team to develop over a longer period.

“We are seeking a project based on stability and trust,” Louzan told the board. He added that the decision demonstrated the federation’s confidence in De la Fuente and in a plan that will span several years of major competitions.

He also described De la Fuente as “the most decorated manager in the history of the national team”, arguing that his years within the federation made him deserving of the opportunity to continue in the role.

The new deal is expected to be presented officially at an event at the City of Football, attended by De la Fuente and representatives from Spanish football. The gathering will outline the next stage of the world champions’ programme.

De la Fuente’s new period in charge will begin with Spain’s qualifying campaign for Euro 2028, while the team will also take part in the next edition of the Nations League.

Spain are expected to play their first matches in September and October against England, Croatia and the Czech Republic. Those fixtures will mark the start of a fresh phase for a side aiming to maintain its success in European and world football.

The RFEF announced the board’s decision on 21 September 2026, confirming that De la Fuente’s tenure will continue for another six years beyond the current agreement.
