Real Madrid Miss Chance to Close Gap on Atletico with Draw Against Valencia
Real Madrid failed to capitalize on Atletico Madrid’s shock 2-0 loss to Levante on Sunday, as they were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw at home by Valencia CF in La Liga. Despite a standout performance from Cristiano Ronaldo, the result leaves Real Madrid still trailing their rivals in the title race.
With Atletico’s unexpected defeat, a win for Carlo Ancelotti’s men would have brought them level on points with Barcelona, who were also held to a 2-2 draw by Getafe on Saturday. Moreover, Real Madrid would have moved within three points of Atletico, with a game in hand to play against Valladolid on Wednesday. However, the Madrid side failed to seize the opportunity.
Although they had the better of the early chances, it was Valencia who took the lead through a well-executed strike from Jérémy Mathieu. Real Madrid struggled to find a way past the resolute Valencia defense, and in the second half, the visitors extended their advantage when Dani Parejo added a second goal, beating goalkeeper Diego Lopez.
Real Madrid eventually responded through captain Sergio Ramos, who managed to get his team back into the game with a header. As the match entered its final stages, Ronaldo displayed his trademark quality with a magnificent goal in the 92nd minute, collecting Angel Di Maria’s cross and finishing with composure. Despite this, Valencia held firm, and the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
With the title race heating up, Real Madrid will now look to bounce back in midweek action as they seek to reduce the gap to both Barcelona and Atletico.
