Stalemate in Soweto Derby as Chiefs and Pirates Share the Spoils
South Africa’s most iconic football fixture, the Soweto derby, ended in a goalless draw on Saturday as Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates played out a tense but entertaining match in front of a packed FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.
While the 0–0 scoreline may suggest a lack of action, the derby lived up to its reputation with moments of high drama and quality football that had the 90,000-strong crowd on the edge of their seats.
Both teams created chances to win the match, with each side striking the crossbar in the second half. Kaizer Chiefs came close in the 57th minute through Siphiwe Tshabalala, whose curling effort had Pirates goalkeeper Mhlongo beaten but clipped the bar. Just minutes later, Sifiso Myeni almost gave the Buccaneers the lead, smashing a shot off the woodwork in the 65th minute.
Despite the lack of goals, the match was rich in intensity and showcased the fierce rivalry and passion that defines South African football’s biggest clash.
The result sees Orlando Pirates extend their unbeaten run to ten matches, their best form since 2013. It’s a welcome boost for a side that has been rebuilding consistency this season.
For Kaizer Chiefs, the draw allows them to maintain their grip at the top of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) table and preserves coach Stuart Baxter’s unbeaten record in Soweto derbies since taking charge of the club.
