South Africa’s Wonderboy Makhubu buzzing after netting debut Stellenbosch goal in draw against TS Galaxy
South African youngster Wonderboy Makhubu has expressed his excitement after opening his scoring account for Stellenbosch FC in a 1-1 stalemate against TS Galaxy in the Premiership clash on Saturday night.
The match, played at the Danie Craven Stadium, saw the striker deliver a crucial moment for his side, scoring his first goal since joining the club and helping them secure a valuable point.
Makhubu, who previously featured for Sekhukhune United F.C. and Magesi F.C., expressed his delight after finally breaking his goal drought for Stellenbosch. The forward admitted that although he had gone several matches without scoring, he never lost confidence in his ability to make a decisive contribution.
Speaking after the match, the striker revealed that his mindset going into every game is centered on scoring.
“From the first minute, and in fact in every game, I have the belief that I am going to score,” Makhubu said. “I approach every single move, from when it starts at the back with the build-up play, with the mindset that it’s going to end with me putting the ball in the net.”
The goal itself came after a well-worked attacking move that developed down the flank. Anticipating the delivery, Makhubu instinctively made his way into the penalty area, hoping to meet the cross.
“So, when it went out wide, I instinctively moved to the box expecting the cross,” he explained. “Devin saw me, and when it came, I did a short prayer to say, ‘Eish, can I please score this one!’ because I had played a few games for the club without scoring.”
The striker admitted that the wait for his first goal had gradually begun to weigh on him, but he remained determined to deliver as a forward whose primary responsibility is to find the back of the net.
“Of course, bit by bit, that puts a person under more pressure,” he added. “But I am a striker and it’s my job to score goals, so I was very happy to open my account.”
Makhubu believes the breakthrough goal will serve as a turning point for him as he looks to build momentum during the remainder of the campaign.
“That has boosted my confidence a lot, so hopefully, going forward, even more goals will come,” he said.
Despite the positive moment for the striker, the result means Stellenbosch remain 10th on the Betway Premiership table, as the team coached by Gavin Hunt continues its push to break into the top eight positions before the end of the season.
With his first goal now behind him, Makhubu will be hoping the strike marks the beginning of a strong scoring run that could help propel Stellenbosch higher up the standings in the weeks ahead.
