South Africa defender Ime Okon says Bafana Bafana are looking forward to facing Egypt in Sunday’s international friendly at the Cairo International Stadium.
The match will renew the rivalry between the two nations, with South Africa aiming to finish the international break with another positive result after recording consecutive victories against Guinea and Eritrea in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
The previous competitive meeting between Bafana Bafana and the Pharaohs came in the group stage of the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. Egypt won that match 1-0 after a contentious penalty converted by Mohamed Salah.
Okon, 22, believes the game will provide South Africa with an opportunity to measure themselves against one of the continent’s strongest sides.
“As we know, Egypt is one of the biggest teams in Africa,” Okon told Safa.net.
“As a player, you always want to play the best teams and challenge yourself. I think the feeling within the team is very, very exciting because we are going to play against them, test ourselves and show them what we are about. All the guys are really excited and looking forward to the game.”
South Africa’s current FIFA international window has extended beyond two weeks, making it longer than usual. However, Okon says the additional time together has not been difficult for the squad, particularly with the team having started the break with two wins.
“I think we’ve adjusted well to the break,” he added.
The Hannover 96 defender said the players had adapted to the extended period in camp because of their existing relationships and the team’s results.
“We know each other quite well as a group, so it’s been long, but it hasn’t really felt long for us,” he said. “We get along well and we’re winning as well.
“So it’s a good feeling in the camp. We’re just enjoying the time here now.”
