Thubelihle Shamase, a rising star in South African football, has taken a significant stride in her burgeoning career by signing for FC Gintra, Lithuania’s reigning champion club.
In an official announcement released on Friday, FC Gintra confirmed the acquisition of Thubelihle Shamase, heralding her arrival as a notable addition to the team.
“The Lithuanian champions will welcome 22-year-old South African national team striker Thubelihle Shamase, who will don the number 6 jersey,” stated FC Gintra.
For Shamase, this move marks her maiden venture into European football, having spent recent seasons playing in her native South Africa, notably representing the University of Johannesburg.
Shamase boasts a remarkable pedigree within South African football, having progressed through all levels of the national teams and currently serving as a key member of the senior women’s national squad.
Her talents have earned her recognition on the continental stage, with a nomination among the top ten young players across Africa in 2023.
In 2022, Shamase clinched the women’s CAN title with Banyana Banyana, followed by a Golden Boot accolade at the CECAFA zone women’s tournament in the subsequent year, courtesy of her five-goal haul.
Mantas Radavičius, the director of FC Gintra, lauded Shamase’s arrival and highlighted her prowess on the field. “We identified areas to bolster our offensive lineup and diligently pursued reinforcements early in the season.
Shamase’s inclusion significantly enhances our attacking options. It’s a testament to her talent that she has earned a place in the South African national team, and we eagerly anticipate her debut with our club,” remarked Radavičius.
As Shamase embarks on her European journey with FC Gintra, her signing underscores the growing international appeal of women’s football and the increasing recognition of African talent on the global stage.
With her blend of skill and determination, Shamase is poised to make a significant impact as she embraces this new chapter in her career.
