Qatar SC has confirmed the departure of Percy Tau and Ben Malango Ngita as the club begins a restructuring process following a disappointing 2024–2025 campaign.
The Qatari side, dissatisfied with recent results, announced a wave of changes to its squad on Thursday, with the exits of Tau and Malango among the most prominent. Both players, each with extensive experience in African football, are now set to pursue new opportunities ahead of the upcoming season.
Malango, 31, leaves the club after nearly two seasons in Doha. Having signed with Qatar SC on 4 September 2022, the Congolese striker featured in 26 matches across all competitions during the most recent campaign.
He registered five goals and one assist, providing flashes of the attacking prowess he has displayed throughout his career, though falling short of expectations set by the club.
Tau’s stay in Qatar proved even shorter. The South African international joined Qatar SC on 11 January 2025 in what was viewed at the time as a mid-season reinforcement. However, the former Al Ahly and Brighton & Hove Albion forward struggled to find his rhythm in the Qatari league.
In 10 appearances, Tau failed to score but contributed with four assists, often showing creativity in buildup play, though his overall impact was limited.
With both players now free agents, attention turns to their next moves. At 31, they remain experienced options with strong resumes on the continent.
Tau, in particular, is already believed to be attracting interest from several African clubs, where his reputation remains strong due to his influential performances with South Africa and during his tenure in the CAF Champions League.
Qatar SC’s decision to part ways with the duo is part of a broader overhaul intended to revitalize the squad ahead of the 2025–2026 season.
Club management has expressed clear intent to rebuild after failing to meet targets in the just-concluded campaign, which included underwhelming results both domestically and in cup competitions.
While no official statement was provided detailing the reasons behind the individual exits, the timing aligns with the club’s broader strategy of streamlining the squad and making room for new signings in key positions.
Both Tau and Malango were among the higher-profile players on the roster and their departure signals a shift in direction for the Doha-based side.
For now, Tau and Malango face the challenge of securing new clubs in a competitive transfer market. Their experience and skillsets could prove valuable assets, particularly for African teams seeking to bolster their attacking options. Both players are expected to evaluate multiple offers in the coming weeks as they look to relaunch their careers elsewhere.
Qatar SC has yet to confirm the full list of players set to depart, but more changes are expected in the coming days as part of what the club has described as a necessary rebuild.
