South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns shine as Africa endures mixed fortunes in 2025 Club World Cup opener

Mamelodi Sundowns delivered Africa’s sole victory on the opening day of the 2025 Club World Cup group stage, as the continent’s other representatives endured a challenging start to the tournament.

The South African champions edged past Ulsan Hyundai 1-0 in Group F, marking a vital three points that position them well ahead of a high-stakes clash with Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

The hard-fought win not only boosts confidence in the Sundowns camp but also offers a glimmer of hope for Africa’s overall campaign at the tournament.

Elsewhere, Al Ahly were left to rue missed chances in their goalless draw against Inter Miami.

Facing a star-studded American side led by Lionel Messi, the Egyptian giants stood firm and impressed defensively, but their profligacy in front of goal prevented them from securing maximum points.

They now turn their focus to a critical match against Palmeiras in Group A, knowing that only a win will keep their qualification hopes on track.

It was a far tougher day for the other two African clubs involved.

Espérance Tunis fell 2-0 to Flamengo in Group D.

The Tunisian side struggled to contain the pace and precision of the Brazilian outfit, who dominated the encounter and capitalised on defensive lapses to claim all three points.

The result leaves Espérance needing a significant turnaround in form to stay alive in the competition.

Wydad Casablanca, meanwhile, faced a daunting opener against Manchester City and were dispatched 2-0 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Despite some spirited moments and a handful of chances—most notably in the 22nd and 32nd minutes—the Moroccan side failed to convert.

City’s clinical edge proved the difference, and Wydad now face a must-win encounter against Juventus to avoid an early exit.

The first round of fixtures paints a mixed picture for African clubs at the tournament.

With just one win, one draw, and two losses, the pressure now mounts ahead of the second matchday.

While Sundowns have laid a solid foundation, the onus is on Al Ahly, Espérance, and Wydad to respond and revive Africa’s collective challenge on the global stage.
