South Africa Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie has announced that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology will be implemented in April 2025 amid growing concerns about officiating.
Clubs in the South African top-flight including Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Stellenbosch, have raised numerous concerns about officiating this season.
Just recently, Peter Shalulile, who plies his trade for Mamelodi Sundowns saw his goal disallowed for offside.
In an attempt to address officiating crisis, South Africa has decided to resort to VAR with immediate effect.
The country’s Sports Minister has confirmed that the introduction of VAR will take place in April 2025.
This technology is expected to significantly improve the quality of refereeing by minimizing errors and enhancing fairness in games.
