South Africa face ‘miracle’ mission to reach World Cup last 16
South Africa head coach Hugo Broos says it would be a “miracle” if Bafana Bafana reached the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite the team already securing a historic place in the knockout stages.
The 1996 CAF African champions have progressed beyond the group stage of the World Cup for the first time in their history. They finished second in Group A behind co-hosts Mexico, edging out tournament favourites South Korea to claim their place in the knockout rounds.
South Africa must now overcome co-hosts Canada in a Round of 32 tie at Los Angeles Stadium on Sunday evening [21:00 SAST] if they are to continue their unexpected run.
Broos believes the team’s campaign has already exceeded expectations, but the Belgian coach has made it clear that his players are not content simply to have reached the knockout phase.
“We can already say this World Cup has been successful. Everyone expected and hoped that we should reach the second round, and we are here,” Broos told reporters.
“This is incredibly important, but it does not mean we are satisfied to just play the game tomorrow and go home. Once you get to this stage, you want everything, and we want to win.”
South Africa secured their place in the next phase by beating South Korea 1-0 in their final group match. Broos has urged his players to reproduce the determination and intensity they showed in that victory when they face Canada.
The coach expects a demanding contest against a physically strong Canadian side and warned that Bafana Bafana will need to perform at their highest level to have any chance of progressing.
“If we can show the same mentality and the same level that we displayed against South Korea, then I think we have a genuine chance to win,” Broos added.
The result against South Korea allowed South Africa to finish above one of the tournament’s leading contenders and complete a notable turnaround in their World Cup campaign. Their reward is a meeting with Canada, one of the co-host nations, in a potentially tense knockout match.
Broos said the team’s progress so far represented a major achievement, but he also stressed that reaching the Round of 32 had increased the squad’s ambitions rather than ended them.
“Canada is a very tough, physical team. We will have to be at our absolute best; otherwise, it will be impossible. But if we can achieve progression to the next round, that will be a true miracle for Bafana Bafana.”
South Africa’s match in California is therefore both a celebration of their historic advancement and an opportunity to go further than any previous Bafana Bafana side at the FIFA World Cup. Their challenge is to maintain the mentality that carried them past South Korea and produce another upset against Canada.
