Former Liverpool captain Graeme Souness has commended the club’s successful efforts in securing contract extensions for star players Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, describing it as the most significant accomplishment under manager Arne Slot this season.
Souness emphasized the importance of retaining the duo, who have been instrumental in Liverpool’s recent successes.
“They have got a fabulous manager, a fabulous group of players,” explained Souness in an interview with Liverpool.com.
“The biggest job [Arne] Slot had this year was to keep Van Dijk and Salah for the next couple of years – and he’s done it.
“That was the biggest job because they are two outstanding performers.”
Both Salah and Van Dijk have recently committed their futures to Liverpool.
Egyptian forward, Salah, signed a new two-year contract extension, while Dutch defender Van Dijk agreed to a two-year deal, securing his stay at Anfield until 2027.
Souness’s praise underscores the significance of these renewals, especially amid speculation about potential departures.
The retention of Salah and Van Dijk is seen as a statement of intent by Liverpool, aiming to maintain stability and competitiveness in both domestic and European competitions.
