The Nations League would consist of four divisions with a system of promotion and relegation after each tournament. The winners of each group would then compete in a “Final Four” tournament held on neutral ground during the summer of odd years. The aim of this format is to reduce the number of friendly matches against South American teams typically scheduled during European summers.
The proposal will be discussed further during the UEFA congress, with Gianni Infantino, UEFA’s general secretary, emphasizing the need for new initiatives to address scheduling challenges and ensure competitive matches for all countries.
While UEFA moves forward with plans for the Nations League, there are suggestions for FIFA to consider similar innovations, such as a “World Cup of Stars” or a “World Cup of Continents,” which would bring together the best players or teams from each continent.
