Cameroon head coach Rigobert Song delivered an impassioned defence of Martin Hongla amidst controversial claims the Italy-based midfielder was excluded from AFCON selection over implicit locker room theft allegations.
Local television pundits created a firestorm by accusing Hongla of suspiciously having sole access to Song’s living quarters where items were reported missing.
Hongla’s subsequent AFCON squad omission was presented as retribution from the indignant manager.
However, an incensed Song slammed suggestions 25-year old Hongla was barred due to questions over his integrity during the final team selection process.
“This is nonsense. He’s never stolen, there’s no problem,” a defiant Song stated at a press conference this week.
“He’s a player I’ve known since the U23s, he’s like my son. Martin Hongla has never stolen, it is simply a choice on my part not to summon him.”
While leaving the door open for a future Hongla return, Song emphasized no personal issue factored into surprisingly cutting the Hellas Verona standout who captained Cameroon during World Cup qualification.
Purely footballing motives were cited with abundant central midfield options forcing Song into tough selection calls.
But the legendary former skipper was adamant perceived misdeeds played zero part amidst mounting criticism over Hongla’s absence.
By passionately dismissing the shopkeeper rumours, Song has gone on the front foot to shelter Hongla from reputational attacks as Cameroon eyes hosting duties two years from now.
Far from frozen out for disciplinary reasons, Rigobert Song still counts on both the talent and character of midfield star Hongla motoring the Indomitable Lions towards further glory.
