Regobert Song, the head coach of Cameroon, humbly acknowledged the superior performance of Senegal as his team faced a 3-1 defeat in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, recognizing the opposition’s prowess on the pitch.
The defending champions secured their spot in the next round alongside Cape Verde, emerging victorious with a 3-1 scoreline.
During the post-match press conference, Song stated, “In the face of a defeat, we must take responsibility, and thus, we must admit that Senegal was better than us in the match.”
He added, “Senegal was stronger than us. Their players were positioned well on the field. They deserved their victory.
On our part, we have young players in the national team, and they are in the early stages of their experience.”
Addressing what didn’t go as planned, Song remarked, “I believe the players gave their all during the match, and the small details made the difference in the game.”
Optimistic as always, he concluded, “As long as there is a final match, there are no calculations we should make.
The next match will be a final for us, and I know we will qualify for the second round.”
Senegal has maintained its dominance over Cameroon since 2005, with the two teams meeting five times, resulting in three victories for Senegal and two draws.
Senegal secured its place in the Round of 16 after topping the group with 6 points.
Cameroon’s tally halted at one point following a previous draw with Guinea.
The Indomitable Lions now need a victory against Gambia in the upcoming match to advance to the Round of 16, turning their attention to the pivotal encounter.
