Former Egypt coach Diaa El-Sayed has shed light on the challenges surrounding dual-nationality players, highlighting that financial demands often complicate efforts to secure their commitment to the national team.
El-Sayed revealed that he encountered such issues firsthand while serving on the Egyptian national team’s technical staff under Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz.
He said the problem of dual-nationality players seeking payment for national team appearances is a recurring and real obstacle.
“The issue of dual nationality is a real problem, because some players ask for money, and this actually happened to me while I was working with Queiroz.”
He added that recruiting high-profile dual nationals is increasingly difficult, as many are reluctant to represent Egypt.
He pointed to the example of Ibrahim Diaz, who opted to play for Morocco, noting that such cases are becoming more common. El-Sayed suggested that the most effective approach is to engage these players at a younger age before they rise to prominence.
El-Sayed also disclosed that Real Oviedo midfielder Haitham Hassan requested financial compensation to represent Egypt, underscoring the depth of the issue.
He concluded by saying that while incorporating dual nationals could help address some of the national team’s challenges, it should not be viewed as the sole solution.
He emphasized the need for comprehensive development of Egypt’s football system to create long-term stability and success.
