Sohaib Nair’s comeback brings hope for Algeria’s national team
After months on the sidelines, defender Sohaib Nair is finally regaining his form and momentum.
Recently recovered from a serious ankle ligament injury and surgery last July, Nair returned to action with En Avant Guingamp, playing his first full match in the French Cup’s third round against Saint-Colomban Locmine. This marks an important step in his journey back to top-level football.
Nair’s path has been challenging and slow, after joining full training at the end of October, he waited nearly three weeks before getting a taste of official competition again. His appearance in reserve team play against AS Vitre was a critical test prior to joining the main squad. Now, with a start in the cup, he’s rebuilding confidence and rhythm.
The next goal for Nair is to convince Algeria’s national coach Vladimir Petkovic of his readiness. Previously selected for the March and June training camps, injury kept him from making his national team debut, especially in a game he was set to play against Rwanda. With Algeria’s defense still seeking strong alternatives behind Aissa Mandi and Ramy Bensebaini, Nair’s return could be timely, especially as tactical plans may open up a new spot for him.
Focused on making the list for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Nair faces tough competition and a tight schedule. Still, his steady progress and growing minutes suggest he could soon be a key option for Algeria’s immediate future. His latest match signals not just a personal comeback, but renewed ambitions for club and country
