Sofyan Amrabat seals Ajax switch after Fenerbahce exit

Ajax have signed Morocco international Sofyan Amrabat on a free transfer after he ended his contract with Fenerbahce.

The 30-year-old midfielder has agreed a deal with the Amsterdam club that took effect immediately and will run until 30 June 2028. Ajax confirmed the agreement during the current summer transfer window, completing the move without a transfer fee.

The club welcomed their latest addition on social media, writing: “Welcoming our newest addition. Happy to have you at Ajax, Sofyan Amrabat! 🇲🇦”

Amrabat began his professional career with Utrecht before continuing his career in the Netherlands at Feyenoord. He later moved abroad, gaining experience in several European leagues.

His clubs outside the Netherlands have included Club Brugge, Hellas Verona, Fiorentina, Manchester United and Fenerbahce. During the previous season, he played in Spain for Real Betis.

The move gives Ajax a player with extensive experience at both club and international level. Amrabat has also recently represented Morocco at the World Cup for the third time.

Ajax head coach Jordi Cruyff said the club were delighted to have completed the signing and believed Amrabat would settle quickly because of his previous knowledge of Dutch football.

“We are very happy that we were able to sign Sofyan. He is physically strong, has great ability on the ball and also possesses a great deal of international experience. In addition, he knows the Dutch league well, so we expect him to adapt quickly. By signing him, we get exactly the type of player we were looking for,” said Cruyff.

Amrabat’s return to the Netherlands marks the latest stage of a career that began in the Dutch domestic game before taking him to Belgium, Italy, England, Turkey and Spain.

He first established himself at Utrecht and then joined Feyenoord, giving him an early understanding of the league in which Ajax now expect him to make an immediate contribution.

After leaving the Netherlands, his footballing path took him to Club Brugge and Hellas Verona before a spell with Fiorentina. He subsequently played for Manchester United and Fenerbahce, while his most recent club football came with Real Betis in Spain.

The agreement with Ajax ends the uncertainty surrounding his next club following the termination of his Fenerbahce contract. His new long-term deal will keep him at Ajax through to the end of June 2028.

For Morocco, Amrabat remains an experienced international figure, and his recent appearance at a third World Cup adds to the international pedigree Ajax highlighted when announcing the transfer.
