Sofiane Feghouli: Algeria’s Rising Star Ready for World Cup Debut
Sofiane Feghouli is set to realise a childhood dream as he prepares to represent Algeria at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, starting June 12. The Valencia striker has become a vital figure in Vahid Halilhodzic’s national squad and is one of the few Fennecs playing regularly for a top European club.
Born on December 26, 1989, in Levallois-Perret, France, Feghouli is of Algerian descent and initially represented France at youth level. Between 2006 and 2012, he featured for the French under-21 side, scoring once in five appearances. Despite his early allegiance to France, Algeria’s football officials recognised his talent and engaged him in talks about switching national teams in 2010.
After months of hesitation, Feghouli committed to Algeria in May 2011. Soon after, he was called up by then coach Vahid Halilhodzic for a friendly against Cameroon. The midfielder scored his first official goal for the Fennecs on February 29, 2012, against Gambia, playing a key role in Algeria’s qualification for the World Cup play-offs.
Club Career Progression
Feghouli began his professional career in 2007 with Grenoble Foot 38 in France. Over three seasons, he made 64 appearances and netted three goals, showing early signs of his potential.
In April 2010, he took a significant step by signing a four-year deal with Spanish giants Valencia CF. His debut in the Champions League came on December 10, 2010, when he replaced Pablo Hernández late in the match against Manchester United.
However, with strong competition for places at Valencia, Feghouli found his playing time limited. To gain more experience, he accepted a loan move to Almería in 2011, helping him sharpen his skills in La Liga.
Returning to Valencia, Feghouli has since established himself as a regular starter, impressing with his attacking flair and versatility. His performances have earned him a prominent role in Algeria’s squad, where he is expected to be one of the standout players in Brazil.
International Ambitions
As one of Algeria’s key players, Feghouli carries the hopes of a nation eager for success on football’s grandest stage.

With his blend of skill, pace, and tactical awareness, he aims to make a significant impact during his first World Cup finals.
Feghouli’s journey from the suburbs of Paris to representing Algeria at the World Cup epitomises his determination and passion for the game. With the world watching, the Valencia midfielder is poised to shine and help the Fennecs make a memorable run in Brazil.
