Sofiane Boufal, the talented attacking midfielder, has been forced to withdraw from the remainder of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), as confirmed by the national coach, Walid Regragui, in a press conference on Monday.
Regretfully announcing Boufal’s exit, Regragui stated, “The AFCONis over for Sofiane. This happened in training.
He contracted a muscle injury which will prevent him from continuing the tournament… Unless there is a miracle.”
The absence of Boufal, known for his creativity and flair in the offensive line, poses a notable challenge for the Moroccan team as they progress in the competition.
In addition to Boufal’s unfortunate departure, Regragui addressed the injury concerns surrounding another key player, Hakim Ziyech. Despite Ziyech’s ankle injury, Regragui assured that every effort is being made to make him available for the upcoming match against South Africa.
“We are working every hour and minute to make him available to the national team against South Africa. We spare no effort,” expressed Regragui.
Acknowledging the impact of these injuries on the team’s offensive capabilities, Regragui remained optimistic about the depth of the squad, stating, “It is obvious that these are two key players of the national team who are decisive in the offensive line, but the bench is capable of taking over.”
On a positive note, Regragui provided an update on full-back Noussair Mazraoui, confirming his readiness to contribute against South Africa. “The plan we put in place worked well. Noussair is now fit,” he remarked.
Despite the challenges posed by injuries, the Moroccan national team, led by Regragui, is set to face their South African counterparts on Tuesday at the Laurent Pokou stadium in San Pedro, in the round of 16 of the AFCON 2023. The team will aim to overcome these setbacks and continue their quest for success in the prestigious African football competition.
