Siya Kolisi and Ox Nche could return for Springboks’ Test against All Blacks
Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus says Siya Kolisi and Ox Nche could be available for selection for Saturday’s opening Test against the All Blacks, although both players must first come through training on Monday without any problems.
South Africa begin their final week of preparation for the Greatest Rivalry Test series with only two players considered doubtful because of injury concerns. Kolisi sustained a hamstring problem while playing against Argentina, while Nche has been sidelined since the Nations Championship match against England.
Franco Mostert remains a longer-term injury concern, but Erasmus provided a more positive update on the forward, saying he is progressing well.
“I would say injuries, [there] are probably the only two doubtful players. Sous [Franco Mostert] is really looking well, he’s doing good,” Erasmus said.
The Springboks coach indicated that Kolisi and Nche are no longer necessarily regarded as injured, but both have experienced minor issues that will need to be assessed during Monday’s session.
“I think Siya and Ox is, I wouldn’t say they’re injured still; I think it’s niggles [but] if they get through today, they probably might be good for us. Apart from that, there’s nobody else [injured].”
Their availability could be significant as South Africa prepare to face New Zealand in the first match of the series. Kolisi suffered his hamstring injury in the build-up to the Tests, while Nche’s absence dates back to the Nations Championship fixture against England.
Mostert’s recovery is also being monitored, although Erasmus’ comments suggest the forward is making satisfactory progress. He was described as a long-term injury casualty before the latest update.
Erasmus will name the Springboks team for Saturday’s match on Thursday. Until then, the coaching staff will assess whether Kolisi and Nche are fit enough to be considered for selection after Monday’s training.
The All Blacks series is being billed as the Greatest Rivalry Test series, with South Africa entering the opening week focused on ensuring their key players are available. At present, Erasmus says there are no other injury concerns within the squad beyond Kolisi and Nche.
The final decision on both players will therefore depend on how they respond to training, with their participation in the first Test still to be confirmed.
