Siphiwe Tshabalala gives Phiri Movers a Manchester City experience

Siphiwe Tshabalala has helped his childhood club, Phiri Movers, fulfil a memorable opportunity in England by arranging for the youngsters to travel abroad and play at the Etihad Centre, the home of Manchester City.

The former Bafana Bafana international, who is a Betway ambassador, supported the initiative as part of his continued commitment to grassroots football. The trip gave the young players the chance to experience an overseas journey and play at a venue associated with one of the world’s leading clubs.

For several members of the group, the occasion extended well beyond the match itself. Some had never travelled by air before, while none had previously been abroad.

Tshabalala said the opportunity was especially meaningful because it reflected a dream he had carried since his own early days in the game: providing young footballers with access to experiences and opportunities that might otherwise remain out of reach.

“My childhood football club Phiri Movers was afforded an opportunity to partake in a game at the Etihad Centre, the home of Manchester City, courtesy of Betway,” Tshabalala shared.

“It was a great experience for the boys and by far one of my biggest highlights. My dream of affording kids a platform and better opportunities came to light.

“None of them had ever been on an airplane before and they had never travelled abroad. This was the first group to get this great experience and certainly not the last.

“The story continues…” he added.

The initiative marks a significant moment for Phiri Movers, the club where Tshabalala began his football journey before going on to enjoy a distinguished career and become a Kaizer Chiefs legend.

He also thanked Manchester City and Betway for their role in making the trip possible, recognising the contribution of both organisations to an experience that left a lasting impression on the young players.

For Tshabalala, the project represented a return to the grassroots foundations of his career. It allowed him to support the next generation while reconnecting with the club that helped shape his own path in football.

The visit also provided the first group of Phiri Movers players with a chance to see life outside South Africa and take part in a football experience at a Manchester City venue. Tshabalala made clear that he viewed the trip as the beginning of a longer-term commitment rather than a one-off event.

The former South Africa star indicated that more young players could benefit from similar opportunities in the future, describing the travelling group as the first, but “certainly not the last”, to receive such an experience.
