Sierra Leonean football is currently mired in crisis as former international Mohamed Kallon’s candidacy for the upcoming elections to the local Football Federation has been rejected. This rejection was based on an article stating that candidates must have resided in the country for the last five years. Unfortunately, Kallon and four other candidates did not meet this residency requirement.
In response to this decision, 10 out of the 14 elite football clubs have decided to boycott the upcoming championship season. In a letter addressed to the League, these clubs demand the immediate reconsideration of the decision to disqualify the five candidates, citing it as unfair and erroneous. The protesting clubs include Diamond Stars, Gem Stars, Kambui Eagles, Old Edwardians FC, FC Kallon, Bo Rangers, Ports Authority FC, Mighty Blackpool, Central Parade FC, and Freetown City FC.
The rejection left only one application accepted, and it is from a female candidate, Isha Johansen. Mohamed Kallon, a former AS Monaco and Inter Milan striker, has criticized the decision, describing it as “political.” He expresses his confusion about being treated this way, especially after dedicating “19 years of his life and contributing money to building a club, FC Kallon.” The situation reflects the challenges and controversies within Sierra Leonean football administration.
