Shawky Gharib appointed technical director of Egyptian Football Association in move to back local coaches

The Egyptian Football Association has confirmed the appointment of Shawky Gharib as its new technical director, strengthening its policy of relying on home-grown coaching talent.

In a statement on Saturday, the governing body announced that Gharib will take charge of the technical leadership of the Egyptian Football Association, a role that will see him oversee the strategic and technical direction of the national teams’ set-up.

The decision follows guidance from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to place greater trust in Egyptian coaches, a stance reinforced by what the association views as the successful spell of Hossam Hassan with the national team.

The move comes after FilGoal.com had reported earlier that Gharib was the leading candidate to become technical director of the association.

Extensive experience with national teams

Gharib brings long and varied experience within Egyptian football, particularly at international level.

He previously served as assistant coach of the Egypt senior national team under Hassan Shehata from November 2004 until June 2011, during a period in which Egypt dominated African football.

Gharib later took charge of the senior national side himself, leading Egypt for a year from November 2023 to 2024.

He also managed the Egypt Olympic team between 2018 and 2021, adding to his track record in nurturing emerging talent for the national set-up.

Club coaching background

Alongside his international roles, Gharib has built a substantial CV in the domestic game.

He has previously managed several Egyptian Premier League clubs, including Smouha, Ismaily, El Entag El Harby, Al Mokawloon and Ghazl El Mahalla.

By appointing Gharib, the Egyptian Football Association is aiming to draw on that blend of international and club experience as it continues to implement a long-term strategy based on national coaching expertise.
