Serge Aurier signs with Iranian side Persepolis after leaving Nottingham Forest

Serge Aurier has ended his spell as a free agent by signing with Iranian champions Persepolis following his departure from Nottingham Forest.

The Ivorian international, who had been without a club since parting ways with the Premier League side, has committed to a contract running until 2026, with the option of an additional year.

His move to the Tehran-based club marks a significant shift in his career, as the 32-year-old full-back embarks on his first experience outside of European football.

Aurier’s arrival on a free transfer is seen as a shrewd acquisition for Persepolis, who bolster their squad with a seasoned defender without paying a transfer fee.

For the former Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham player, the switch offers a fresh challenge and a chance to rejuvenate his career in a new environment.

Having built his reputation in Europe’s top leagues, Aurier brings a wealth of experience and a strong presence to a club with ambitions of domestic and continental success.

The right-back made his name in France’s Ligue 1 with Toulouse before earning a high-profile move to PSG in 2014.

He later joined Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League and most recently represented Nottingham Forest, where he featured regularly until his exit earlier this year.

At Persepolis, Aurier is expected to play a key leadership role in a team targeting the Iranian Pro League title and a deep run in the AFC Champions League.

His signing adds both quality and experience to a squad already considered among the strongest in the region.

While the move may come as a surprise to some observers, it represents a calculated decision by both player and club. For Aurier, who has been a stalwart of the Ivorian national team with over 80 international caps, the opportunity to extend his playing career in a competitive league and potentially win silverware is an appealing prospect.

Persepolis, for their part, are investing in Aurier’s pedigree and leadership qualities as they aim to maintain their status at the top of Iranian football.

His versatility, tactical awareness, and experience at the highest levels of the game are expected to make an immediate impact in a squad that blends domestic talent with international recruits.

The deal, finalised without delay, was officially confirmed by Persepolis on Monday. Aurier has already arrived in Tehran and is expected to begin training with his new teammates ahead of the upcoming league fixtures.

This latest chapter in Aurier’s career not only provides the defender with a platform to re-establish himself but also highlights the growing appeal of Asian football leagues in attracting seasoned international talent.

With the contract running until 2026 and the potential for an additional year, both parties will be hoping this bold move proves fruitful on and off the pitch.
