Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye has withdrawn from the national team squad after sustaining an ankle injury during the 2026 World Cup qualifier against Sudan, the Senegalese Football Federation has confirmed.
Gueye, who plays for Villarreal, was forced off at half-time in the goalless draw against Sudan in Benghazi, Libya, on Saturday.
Subsequent medical tests revealed a moderate sprain to his right ankle, ruling him out of Senegal’s upcoming qualifier against Togo on Tuesday.
“Our player Pape Gueye was injured during the Sudan-Senegal match on March 22, 2025, in Benghazi.
Tests carried out today revealed a moderate sprain to his right ankle, requiring his return to the club for further treatment,” a statement from the national team read.
The 26-year-old midfielder was absent from Senegal’s training session on Sunday, and following medical assessments, the decision was made for him to return to Spain for rehabilitation.
His absence is a significant blow for the Lions of Teranga as they prepare for a crucial clash against Togo.
Pape Matar Sarr Likely to Replace Gueye
With Gueye sidelined, coach Pape Thiaw is expected to turn to Tottenham midfielder Pape Matar Sarr.
The 22-year-old already stepped in to replace Gueye during the Sudan fixture and impressed with his performance.
Senegal, the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations champions, currently sit third in Group B, trailing both Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
All three teams are separated by just two points, making Tuesday’s encounter vital for Senegal’s qualification hopes.
The group’s top team will secure direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup, while the second-placed side will enter the play-offs.
A victory against Togo is imperative for Senegal to strengthen their position in the race for a World Cup berth.
