Senegal’s Pape Gueye reveals shocking scam incident during Marseille stay
Senegalese international Pape Gueye has opened up about a shocking incident in which he was the victim of financial fraud by someone he once considered family during his time in Marseille. The Villarreal midfielder shared details of how a trusted acquaintance exploited his goodwill, leading to unauthorized withdrawals from his bank account.
The 25-year-old, who spent four seasons at Olympique de Marseille before moving to Spain, revealed that the fraud was carried out by a fellow Senegalese national whom he treated like a younger brother.
In a candid revelation, Gueye explained how his trust was betrayed in a moment of carelessness.
“I’m in a city, the guy is Senegalese, me too, so I took him a bit like my little brother. I opened doors for him, I trusted him.
He came to my house… But in a moment of inattention, he took a photo of my Senegalese bank card and sent himself money via PayPal,” Gueye recounted.
The midfielder explained that the fraud went unnoticed for several months, as the transactions were made using his Senegalese bank card, which did not trigger notifications abroad.
It was only after reviewing his bank statements that he discovered the unauthorized transfers.
“I found out a few months later that he was sending money to himself via PayPal with my bank card from Senegal, so I wasn’t receiving notifications.
He paid me back everything, it was a good amount. You have to be careful with everyone. I also had a betrayal with one of my best friends,” he added, expressing his dismay over repeated betrayals from people he trusted.
Betrayal and Lessons Learned
The incident left Gueye deeply affected, leading him to become more cautious about the people he allows into his inner circle.
Though he eventually recovered the stolen funds after confronting the individual, the emotional toll from the betrayal lingered.
For Gueye, the experience served as a hard-hitting reminder of the importance of vigilance, especially for professional athletes who often find themselves targeted by opportunists.
His story also highlights a broader issue of trust within personal networks, particularly for public figures who often face unique security challenges.
A New Chapter at Villarreal
Now at Villarreal, Gueye is focused on his football career, putting the troubling incident behind him. Since his move to Spain, the Senegalese midfielder has been working hard to re-establish himself and make a significant impact in La Liga.
However, the ordeal in Marseille has clearly shaped his outlook on trust and personal security. Gueye’s openness about the incident aims to caution fellow athletes and the public about the dangers of misplaced trust and the importance of safeguarding personal information.
His message is simple but powerful: even those closest to you can sometimes have hidden intentions, and it’s crucial to remain vigilant.
As he continues to thrive on the pitch with Villarreal, Gueye hopes that his experience serves as a lesson for others, reminding them that awareness and caution are essential—even in the most familiar environments.
