Senegal’s women’s national football team has reached a historic milestone by breaking into the top 10 of the African FIFA Women’s Rankings for the first time.
The Lionesses climbed from 11th to 9th place on the continental list, marking their best-ever position despite not gaining additional points in the latest rankings.
In the global rankings, Mame Moussa Cissé’s side advanced one spot, moving from 83rd to 82nd.
The team’s highest-ever world ranking remains 81st, achieved in August 2023. The Senegalese players maintained their previous score of 1266.07 points.
Senegal’s rise was partly influenced by the performances of other African nations. Tanzania and Kenya’s victories over Equatorial Guinea and Tunisia in the 2026 Women’s AFCON qualifiers contributed to the shifts in the rankings. Equatorial Guinea and Tunisia experienced significant drops, losing eight and 11 places respectively.
The African rankings continue to be led by Nigeria, followed by South Africa and Morocco. Meanwhile, the global list is topped by the United States, with Spain in second place and Germany in third.
Senegal’s recent progress highlights the growing strength of women’s football in the country as the team prepares for future competitions.
