Senegal's Abdallah Ndour retires from football due to injury

Senegalese defender Abdallah Ndour has been forced to retire from professional football at the age of 31 due to a persistent ankle injury.

The En Avant Guingamp left-back, who suffered a stress fracture in October 2023, has been unable to return to full fitness, leading to the termination of his contract with the French club.

A Difficult Farewell

Ndour’s retirement has come as a shock to his teammates and coaching staff. Guingamp manager Sylvain Ripoll expressed his disappointment, highlighting the defender’s professionalism and dedication.

“It’s a tough moment for the squad because Abdallah was highly respected,” Ripoll said. “But unfortunately, this is the harsh reality of football.”

The decision marks the end of a career that saw Ndour battle through challenges while making his mark in French football.

A Career Defined by Resilience

Ndour began his footballing journey at Senegalese academy Génération Foot before moving to France to join FC Metz. In 2014, he was loaned to Racing Club de Strasbourg, where he played a pivotal role in the club’s rise to Ligue 1.

He later signed permanently with Strasbourg and spent six seasons (2014-2020) at the club, helping them secure promotion and winning the Coupe de la Ligue in 2019.

After leaving Strasbourg, he joined FC Sochaux (2020-2023) before signing for Guingamp in 2023. However, injuries plagued his final season, restricting him to just five appearances before the ankle fracture ultimately ended his playing days.

A Brief but Notable International Career

Ndour earned around ten call-ups for Senegal between 2021 and 2023 but made only one start—against Mozambique in the 2024 AFCON qualifiers.

His other appearances for the Teranga Lions were limited to substitute roles, but his commitment to the national team was never in doubt.

His retirement closes the chapter on a career defined by perseverance, discipline, and determination. While his time on the pitch has ended, Ndour leaves behind a legacy of resilience that will be remembered by fans and teammates alike.
