Senegalese winger Mouhamed Lamine Gueye earns first-team call-up and contract extension at Real Oviedo

Senegalese winger Mouhamed Lamine Gueye earns first-team call-up and contract extension at Real Oviedo

Mouhamed Lamine Gueye has signed a contract extension with Real Oviedo and received his first senior team call-up ahead of a decisive clash against Tenerife in LaLiga 2.

The 20-year-old Senegalese winger extended his stay with the Asturian club until 2027, just hours before being named in the first-team squad for Sunday’s away fixture at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López.

The match, part of Matchday 41 of the Spanish second division, holds significant implications for Oviedo’s promotion hopes.

While Tenerife, already relegated to Spain’s third tier, have little to play for, Real Oviedo are in the midst of a tight race for automatic promotion.

Sitting fourth in the table, the Carbayones are within reach of a top-two finish with just two matches remaining in the season. Victory on Sunday is vital to keeping their hopes alive.

For Gueye, the weekend marks a personal milestone. After progressing through the club’s ranks, he will join the senior side for the first time.

His inclusion in head coach Veljko Paunovic’s matchday squad is seen as a vote of confidence in the young winger’s development and potential contribution.

“This is a dream come true,” Gueye said following the announcement. “I’ve been working hard and waiting for an opportunity like this for a long time.

Being with the first team this week has been an incredible experience. The contract extension definitely helped open the door for this call-up. I’m going to give everything and make the most of every moment.”

Born in Khombole, Senegal, Gueye has made steady progress within the club’s youth setup and has trained with the senior squad throughout the week in preparation for the crucial match.

His dynamic pace and technical ability have drawn praise from the coaching staff, and his promotion to the first team reflects the club’s growing emphasis on nurturing young talent from within its academy.

Head coach Veljko Paunovic confirmed that Gueye’s performances in training played a key role in his selection.

“He’s shown the right attitude, he’s hungry to learn, and he’s earned this opportunity,” said Paunovic during his pre-match press conference.

“This is not just a reward, but a sign that he can be part of what we’re building at Oviedo.”

Gueye’s new contract, which ties him to the club until 2027, signals Real Oviedo’s long-term belief in the Senegalese forward.

The deal also ensures the club secures one of its most promising prospects as it looks to establish a sustainable path to success in the coming seasons.

Sunday’s fixture may be Gueye’s first taste of senior action, but it could prove to be a defining moment in his young career.

With Real Oviedo on the brink of returning to Spain’s top flight, his emergence adds another layer of optimism to the club’s ambitious campaign.

As Real Oviedo prepare for one of their most important matches of the season, the presence of a rising talent like Gueye provides both a boost of youthful energy and a glimpse into the club’s promising future.
