Manchester United have been linked with a possible move for Assane Diao, and Como manager Cesc Fàbregas has acknowledged that such interest may not be entirely speculative.
The 19-year-old Senegalese international, who joined Como from Real Betis during the January transfer window, has swiftly made an impact in Serie A.
Diao’s rapid adaptation to Italian football, coupled with his six-goal tally for the Lariani, has turned heads across Europe, with reports from the English press suggesting the Premier League giants are keeping close tabs on his development.
Diao, who recently earned his first cap for Senegal, has become a key figure in Como’s attacking setup. His versatility, composure in front of goal, and physical maturity have made him one of the most promising young players in Italy’s top flight this season.
Naturally, interest from a club of Manchester United’s stature has sparked questions about his future.
Fàbregas, speaking at a press conference on Friday, addressed the speculation surrounding Diao’s potential departure. While careful not to fuel transfer rumours, the former Spain international did not entirely rule out the possibility of a high-profile exit should the right offer materialise.
“Our philosophy is simple,” Fàbregas explained. “We want to sign young, talented players who haven’t had much playing time elsewhere. We bring them here, help them grow, and let them flourish.
The idea is not to sell players immediately, but to develop them so they can contribute meaningfully to the team.”
Pressed specifically about Diao’s future, the Como coach acknowledged that market realities can influence even the best-laid plans.
“Look, if Manchester United were to come in with a €40 million bid for Assane, of course, that would be a conversation worth having,” Fàbregas said candidly.
“But our goal is to build a squad that reflects our identity—young, ambitious, and united. Assane fits that profile perfectly. He’s important to us, and while he’s only 19, he shows a maturity that’s well beyond his years.”
Fàbregas praised Diao’s mentality as much as his on-field ability, noting the calmness with which the Ndongane-born forward has handled the sudden attention surrounding his rise.
“What stands out most is his character,” the Spanish coach added. “He’s not just scoring goals—he’s absorbing pressure, handling the spotlight, and doing it with the right attitude. Some days he’ll get everything right, other days he’ll fall short.
That’s natural for someone his age. But he keeps learning, and that’s what matters.”
While no official approach from Manchester United has been confirmed, Fàbregas’ comments reflect a pragmatic approach to managing emerging talent. Como appear determined to continue nurturing players like Diao, even as Europe’s top clubs begin to circle.
For now, Assane Diao remains focused on his current mission in Serie A. But as his reputation grows, his next move—should it come—could be to one of the biggest stages in world football.
