Senegalese striker Assane Diao faces extended absence as Como coach Cesc Fàbregas urges patience

Como will have to wait longer before seeing young Senegalese forward Assane Diao return to action following a relapse in training that has delayed his recovery.

The 20-year-old, who joined the Italian side from Real Betis, has made just one official appearance this season, featuring in the Coppa Italia victory over Sudtirol on 18 August, which ended 3-1.

A recurring issue stemming from an injury sustained at the end of last season has prevented him from featuring since, leaving Como without one of their most promising attacking options.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, coach Cesc Fàbregas sought to temper expectations regarding the forward’s return.

“His recovery is slower than we had hoped, and I am the first not to want to take any risks,” Fàbregas explained. “I would prefer him to come back at 100% in three or four weeks because he is an essential weapon for us.

He scores goals, and the second half of the season is crucial. We need to support him fully.”

Diao’s absence represents a significant challenge for Como, who have been relying on other attacking options in his absence.

The Senegalese striker’s ability to both create and finish chances makes him a central figure in the team’s plans for the remainder of the season.

His limited appearances so far have only underscored his importance to the squad.

The young forward’s journey has been marked by promise and potential, but also by setbacks. After impressing at Real Betis, he moved to Como with expectations of becoming a key offensive asset.

His early-season injury, however, has interrupted the momentum that both player and club had hoped to build.

Fàbregas emphasised that rushing Diao back too soon could be counterproductive, noting that careful management of his rehabilitation is essential to ensure a full and sustained return to form.

The coach’s cautious approach highlights the balance teams must strike between immediate results and long-term player welfare.

In the coming weeks, Como will continue to rely on other forwards to maintain their attacking threat while Diao works toward full fitness.

Fans and teammates alike will hope that the Senegalese striker can overcome this latest obstacle and make a decisive impact once he returns.

The message from Fàbregas is clear: patience is key, and the priority remains Diao’s health and readiness, rather than a rushed comeback that could risk further injury.
