John Obi Mikel has thrown his full backing behind Nicolas Jackson, insisting the Chelsea forward has the tools to thrive despite recent scrutiny.
The former Blues star stressed that his earlier remarks were not meant as a slight, but rather an honest take on the striker’s development and potential.
“Nicolas has big potential and I never intended to disrespect him,” said Mikel.
“You can see there is a player there. He’s good on the ball, quick and can run in behind. And he stretches defenders, which gives Cole Palmer more space.
“Now it’s just about finishing more chances, and I actually think the competition with Delap will help him improve further. He needs to score more goals, and hopefully Delap’s arrival will cause a positive reaction,” Mikel added.
Jackson, who ended last season with 13 goals and 5 assists in 34 appearances, is now expected to compete more directly with Delap for a starting spot.
Mikel believes the added pressure could be the catalyst Jackson needs to hit another level.
