Senegalese forward Assane Diao returns as Como stun Juventus in Serie A upset
Como secured a stunning 2-0 victory over Juventus on Sunday, handing the Turin giants their first defeat of the Serie A season and moving within touching distance of the top four.
Cesc Fabregas’s side, who began the day in ninth place, produced a disciplined and inspired display that lifted them to fifth in the table—just one point shy of the Champions League positions.
Beyond the historic win, Como had further cause for celebration with the return of Senegalese forward Assane Diao to the matchday squad after a two-month absence.
Although he did not feature, his presence on the bench symbolised a positive step forward for both the player and the club.
Fabregas’s men approached the contest with clear intent following an ambitious summer transfer campaign that brought in Martin Baturina, Jesús Rodríguez, and Nicolas Kühn among others.
Their determination was evident from the opening whistle.
The breakthrough came early. In the fourth minute, following a well-worked corner routine initiated by Da Cunha, Nico Paz delivered an exquisite curling cross to the far post, where Marc Kempf volleyed home to give Como a dream start.
Juventus, who would have moved second with a victory, struggled to find rhythm against a compact and energetic Como side.
Manuel Locatelli, Kenan Yildiz, Álvaro Morata, and Moreno all had opportunities to draw level, but goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio proved unbeatable, making a series of crucial saves to preserve his team’s lead.
The visitors thought they had finally found their equaliser when Jonathan David turned in a loose ball, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside after Koopmeiners was judged to have interfered in the buildup.
Fabregas’s tactical setup frustrated Juventus throughout the match, as Como combined resilience at the back with quick, incisive counterattacks.
The second goal sealed a memorable night for the newly promoted side and their supporters, capping a performance that showcased both defensive steel and creative flair.
While Diao’s absence from the pitch continued, his inclusion in the squad after a lengthy recovery was viewed as a major morale boost.
The 19-year-old’s return offers renewed attacking options for Fabregas as Como continue their impressive start to the campaign.
The victory not only underlined Como’s growing ambitions in Serie A but also signalled that the Lombardy club is determined to challenge Italy’s traditional powerhouses this season—something few would have predicted at the start of the year.
