AS Pikine Crowned Champions in Record-Breaking Senegalese Ligue 1 Pro Season
The 2013-2014 season of Senegal’s Ligue 1 Pro concluded definitively on Monday, marking a historic milestone for AS Pikine, who claimed their first top-flight title in seven years. The season also saw the relegation of Yeggo and DUC, wrapping up a campaign notable for its high-scoring nature in a league traditionally low on goals.
Over the course of 182 matches, a remarkable total of 345 goals were scored — a record unprecedented in Senegalese football. This equates to an average of 1.89 goals per game, with the highest-scoring matchdays being the 10th and 25th, both featuring 20 goals. The 5th matchday was the lowest-scoring round, with only 7 goals netted.
Across the season, 141 different players found the back of the net at least once. Despite finishing second, Jaraaf Dakar boasted the league’s most potent attack, scoring 36 goals — edging ahead of Pikine, Casa Sports, and NGB, each with 30 goals. Notably, Jaraaf’s goals were spread among 12 players, with striker Ibrahima Diop topping the league’s scoring charts at 16 goals.
Close behind was Pikine’s leading marksman Adama Mbaye, who netted 14 goals to help secure his club’s title. Pikine also recorded the most wins during the campaign with 14 victories and remained unbeaten at home, drawing four times and winning nine games at the Alassane Djigo Stadium.
Jaraaf proved the strongest away team with seven wins and two draws on the road, highlighting the competitive balance at the top of the table.
Defensively, AS Pikine were the league’s stingiest side, conceding just 12 goals over 26 matches, whereas relegated side DUC conceded 38. The season also witnessed seven own goals, adding an unusual twist to the tally.
In total, the league saw 114 victories—72 at home and 42 away—and 68 draws, including 31 goalless stalemates, 31 1-1 draws, and 4 matches ending 2-2.
As champions, AS Pikine will receive a prize of 20 million CFA francs and earn the right to represent Senegal in the African Champions League next season. The club also remains in contention for the League Cup, where the winner is expected to receive a similar financial reward.
This successful and record-breaking season marks a bright chapter for Senegalese football, with AS Pikine’s triumph signaling their rise as a dominant force in the country’s top tier.
