Senegal will have two contenders in the race for Africa’s top goalkeeping honour.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the nominees for the 2025 CAF Awards, with Édouard Mendy and Marco Diouf representing the West African nation in the category of Best African Goalkeeper.

Édouard Mendy continues to shine for both club and country. The 32-year-old remains Senegal’s first-choice goalkeeper and a symbol of consistency for the national team.

At Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia, Mendy has maintained his reputation as a commanding presence between the posts, leading his defence with confidence and composure.

His leadership and reliability have earned him another nomination for Africa’s most prestigious goalkeeping award.

Marco Diouf, meanwhile, has risen rapidly within Senegalese football. The young goalkeeper made headlines during the 2023 African Nations Championship (CHAN), where he produced a string of outstanding performances.

His remarkable saves and calmness under pressure helped Senegal claim the bronze medal, earning him the award for Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament. His nomination for the CAF Awards marks another milestone in his promising career.

The two Senegalese stars face tough competition from some of the continent’s finest goalkeepers. Cameroon’s André Onana, who plays for Manchester United, remains one of the leading names in African football.

Cape Verde’s Vozinha also earned a place on the list, remembered for his fiery encounter with Sadio Mané during the 2022 AFCON. Morocco’s Yassine Bounou, a two-time winner of the award, and his compatriot Mounir Mohamedi complete the strong field of nominees.

Senegal’s double nomination underlines the nation’s strength in goalkeeping. Over the past decade, the West African nation has produced a series of talented keepers who have excelled both domestically and abroad.

This recognition highlights the depth and development of Senegal’s football infrastructure, particularly in nurturing top-level goalkeepers.

As the CAF Awards approach, both Mendy and Diouf will aim to bring the prestigious trophy home. Their inclusion reinforces Senegal’s growing dominance in African football, following their consistent performances in international competitions.

The 2025 CAF Awards will celebrate the best of African football, honouring players, coaches, and national teams that have excelled across the year. For Senegal, having two goalkeepers among the finalists is a testament to the nation’s continued excellence and commitment to football development.
