Youssouf Sabaly is on the verge of a transfer to Qatari club Al-Duhail SC, in a move that could mark the next chapter in the Senegalese international’s career.
At 32, the Real Betis defender is reportedly in advanced negotiations with the Doha-based outfit, according to French outlet Foot Mercato.
Currently under contract with Real Betis until the summer of 2026, Sabaly appears to have fallen out of favour at the Spanish club.
Despite featuring prominently over the 2023/24 campaign, registering 34 appearances and providing three assists across all competitions, the veteran right-back is no longer part of the club’s long-term plans.
Betis, who recently finished runners-up in the UEFA Conference League, are said to be open to offloading the experienced defender this summer.
Sabaly’s anticipated departure would conclude a three-year spell at Betis, having joined the Andalusian side in July 2021.
His time in Seville followed a notable tenure in France, where he rose through the ranks of Paris Saint-Germain’s academy before forging a reputation in Ligue 1.
Loan spells at Evian and Nantes eventually led to a more stable stint at Bordeaux, where he developed into one of the league’s most reliable full-backs.
Now, the Senegalese defender seems prepared to embrace a new challenge outside Europe. Al-Duhail, a powerhouse in the Qatar Stars League, is believed to be offering Sabaly a compelling package, both in sporting ambitions and financial terms.
The club has a history of attracting high-profile talent and competing regularly at the top of the domestic league, as well as in continental competitions such as the AFC Champions League.
If the deal is finalised, Sabaly will follow a growing trend among Senegalese footballers opting to continue their careers in the Gulf region.
The Middle Eastern leagues have increasingly become a destination for established African players seeking new environments and fresh incentives in the twilight of their playing days.
While no official confirmation has been released by either club, sources suggest that discussions are progressing positively.
Should the move materialise, it would represent a significant change of pace for Sabaly, who has spent his entire professional career in European football until now.
His potential arrival at Al-Duhail could also serve to bolster the Qatari club’s defensive options heading into the new season.
Known for his tactical discipline, strong positioning, and ability to contribute offensively from wide areas, Sabaly would bring a wealth of experience to the side’s backline.
Born in Le Chesnay, France, Sabaly chose to represent Senegal at international level and has earned numerous caps for the Lions of Teranga, including appearances in major tournaments such as the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup.
As both player and club prepare for what appears to be an imminent parting of ways, attention now turns to the formalities of the potential transfer.
With the summer window underway, an official announcement could come in the coming weeks, sealing Sabaly’s transition from La Liga to the Qatar Stars League.
