Senegalese Defender Sadibou Sané handed three-match ban

FC Metz defender Sadibou Sané has been suspended for three matches following his red card during last weekend’s Ligue 1 fixture against Paris FC.

The Senegalese centre-back, who had earlier scored in the game, was first shown a yellow card in first-half stoppage time before being dismissed in the 80th minute for a reckless challenge on Nigeria’s Moses Simon.

The referee acted immediately, but the length of Sané’s punishment was confirmed only after the French league’s disciplinary committee reviewed the incident.

Their ruling means Sané will miss three key fixtures, including Metz’s upcoming home games against Angers and Le Havre, as well as a difficult away trip to AS Monaco.

He will be eligible to return on 5 October, when Metz host Olympique de Marseille.

The suspension comes at a frustrating moment for both player and club.

Sané had made a strong start to the season, starting all three of Metz’s opening matches in Ligue 1 and establishing himself as a reliable presence in the back line.

His goal against Paris FC had briefly underlined his growing influence, before his dismissal changed the tone of his performance.

Metz, meanwhile, face the challenge of adjusting without one of their regular starters at a time when points are crucial.

The matches against Angers and Le Havre represent opportunities for the team to consolidate their position, while the clash with Monaco is expected to be among their toughest tests of the early season.

Sané’s absence will force coach László Bölöni to reshuffle his defence, potentially giving fringe players an opportunity to stake a claim.

For the 22-year-old Senegalese defender, the enforced break offers little more than the chance to regroup before what promises to be a demanding October.

The disciplinary committee’s verdict serves as a reminder of Ligue 1’s strict stance on dangerous play.

Sané’s challenge on Simon was judged to have endangered the opponent, leaving the officials with little room for leniency.

As Metz prepare for life without him over the next three fixtures, Sané will look to ensure his return against Marseille marks a more positive chapter in his season, with the hope of quickly putting the setback behind him.
